Today we will be nitpicking Disenchantment season 1. I will try to avoid spoilers but if you haven't watched the show you probably won't know who I am talking about anyway.
When Part 1 came out I never even considered watching Disenchantment. Lucky for Part 2, I was bored and looking for something to watch when it came out and I ended up watching through all 20 episodes in a week.
The show was not really what I was expecting, sure it had plenty of jokes (and of course the Shrek style "oh look it's this modern thing but in old times" jokes that I knew would happen) but it also had a much stronger story focus than I would have imagined. A good portion of the show is actual world building and storyline progression. I think the humor side might suffer because of this, not because the show isn't funny but because jokes that fall flat are a lot more noticeable when there's less jokes to go around. Either way, I left Part 1 actually looking forward to the second, not because of the cliffhangers or the humor but just because I want to see where the show goes in the future.
Part 1 did a decent job of introducing the series. The first episode didn't have me completely convinced, especially when it ended on a relatively mundane cliffhanger, but a few episodes later I knew I'd be watching the whole thing.
Unfortunately, Part 2 did not progress the story as much as I had hoped. We got some new insights into the family of Princess Tiabeanie as well as her friendship with Luci/Elfo but it felt like more should have happened with Dagmar. A lot of Part 2 just felt like it was introducing things to be used in Season 2. For example, they keep dangling the plotline of who Elfos mom is even though they already heavily hinted at it and had the perfect opportunity to reveal it but instead chose to just never mention it again for the rest of the season. Similarly, Part 2 starts and ends with Dagmar but her biggest contribution is just being part of memories/dreams instead of actually doing anything.
The last few episodes of Part 2 also really wanted point how Bean couldn't become Queen by suddenly having her want to do a bunch of things that women apparently couldn't do. The repetition of it made it immediately obvious something was going to happen, given that Bean had done pretty much whatever she wanted after escaping her arranged marriage ~15 episodes prior. It would have felt more natural if they had eased into it a little bit smoother instead of suddenly having multiple characters spell it out as a problem in such a short time.
This obviously all culminates in the new antagonists that create the Part 2 cliffhanger. I have to say, the inclusion of a modern-like steampunk kingdom seems a bit meh to me. I've seen steampunk handled well in fantasy (elder scrolls, for example) but they introduce it into disenchantment with flying machines and potato radios and just keep going. It just doesn't really add anything to the story or humor and feels like a one-off episode that accidentally became a major plot point.
Part of my dislike of it might be due to the way the kingdom reacts to the appearance of technology by suddenly turning their jokey dark ages level stupidity firmly against the protagonists. However, this is more forgivable if seen from the viewpoint that the antagonists were probably fueling the stupidity to further their own agenda. The situation with the secret society is exactly where I thought the story should go and I'm honestly surprised it took so long to get there, although that probably has more to do with Season 1 being split in 2 parts.
Finally, there is the elves, who made such a big deal of never leaving their home in Part 1 and then relocate their entire society for no apparent reason in Part 2. Obviously, there's a lot more story opportunity with them living in the kingdom but they just kind of do it even though it gets a lot of them killed/nearly killed for no reason. There is the increasing hints of a secret somewhere in dreamland but that doesn't explain why they chose to have their whole race living in danger 24/7, after all it's not like Pops or Kissy are helping search for this secret.
This isn't to say I didn't like Part 2 though; it just had a lot more for me to complain about than Part 1 and it's also fresher in my memory. It's entirely possible that the things I didn't like will make a lot more sense after the series progresses. I'd say the big winner of Part 2 was probably Luci. Elfo was fun in Part 1 but Luci came into his own in Part 2 while Elfo wasted an unnecessary amount of time whining about Bean choosing to save her mother’s life before saving his.
To sum up my feeling for the show, I'll be watching the new episodes as soon as I can but I'm completely ok with that "soon" being a year away. The only way I'd regret watching this show is if it ended unexpectedly on one of the cliffhangers they are so fond of.
