I've decided to begin fulfilling the name of this blog by posting about the various movies/shows I watch. I'm not much of a reviewer so I'll probably spend most of these posts nitpicking random little things. Also as a warning, major spoilers are ahead!
So today I finally went to see Avengers: Endgame and got the best seats in a not remotely crowded theater. The advantages of seeing it at 10:50am on a weekday. Overall I liked the move a lot and the story went in a direction that I never really expected.
Although I did unfortunately have the 2 major deaths spoiled to me by some idiots in the break room at work who walked into room and immediately starting a loud discussion about which spoilers they had heard. But that was the only real spoilers I heard and I foolishly assumed there would be more deaths than there ended up being.
Starting with the nitpicking in no particular order, let's talk about the time travel. They actually did a fairly good job of the time travel except for a few key problems that were mostly avoidable.
The first being that they needed a machine to initiate the time travel but then once they were in the past they had no trouble jumping through time to any other point without any assistance. That would imply that as long as the machine had been activated at any point in time ever then you could use it to time travel to anywhen.
This issue becomes even more obvious when you look at the plot hole that Captain America creates by staying in the past. He does multiple time hops without ever returning and then decides to stay in the past creating an alternate timeline. Despite this, he somehow also ends up in the current timeline as an old man without using the return portal. What's odd is they could easily have had him return through the portal as an old man and avoided the whole issue.
Also, the existence of that time travel technology should have some lasting implications on the series. With Hank Pym brought back to life the remaining avengers have the ability to create new Pym Particles and time travel whenever and wherever they want. There's going to need to be a counter to that technology because realistically the only other way to get rid of it would be to destroy all the machines and kill everyone who knows about it. And that's not going to happen.
Going beyond the time stuff, one thing that caught my eye was a very obvious reference to Marvels stated goal of increasing diversity in their coming movies.
Specifically, I'm talking about when every woman on the battlefield all magically appeared around Captain Marvel to help her out. To me it feels like very little progress has been made if they feel the need to show off with scenes like that. Why were all the men too busy to help and why were all the women available to come running at a seconds notice?
It felt more like somebody said "Hey wouldn't it be cool if...?" and then they just forced it in because it made a good image for a poster or trailer.
I think that's about enough for the movie now though. I think if there's one thing to summarize the quality of the movie, it would be that it was so good that it felt shorter than a lot of the MCU movies despite being the longest one.
